PLAYFOLD
This menswear collection was created with a sustainable practice for thesis. The title, “Playfold,” means paper folding technique and playing with shapes, materials, color blocking, and etc. The design was started from rebellious Korean street fashion and skateboarding aesthetics. It reflects my own culture as Korean and my teenage moment of growing up in Santa Cruz.
It emphasizes the unique sustainable method, upcycling used clothings, to knit some elements of diagonal and assymetrical pieces that are found in collar of shirt, jacket, placket, neckband, sleeves, and hem. The used clothings were laser-cut into fabric yarns and knitted into the necessary forms. This specific sustainable practice won several awards as below list.
Royal Society of Arts in US, Award - Promoting Sustainable Innovation for Social Goods, 2015
Cradle to Cradle Scholarship Award - Sponsored by Cradle to Cradle, 2015
SPARK Design Award “Gold Award” - Sustainable method of recycling for clothing industry, 2016
